Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect (Detailed Explanation)

In this post, I will talk about:

  1. What is The Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect?
  2. How Does the Law of Cause and Effect Work?
  3. How to Use the Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect
  4. Summary

The universe is governed by law, that which we called “The Truth” for that which does not change. No one can break the law for we are the Law, the universe is the Law, and God is the Law.

If there is no law, the universe will be in chaos, and nature keeps telling us that the universe is always in order.

That’s why you keep seeing the alternation of days and nights, of summers and winters; cats eat mouses, dogs chase cats, etc.

Those natural indications are what scholars referred to as “Signs of God” because God is in everything and everything is God, yet God is only One.

There are 7 Universal Laws that govern the universe. If you come from the occult background, you may refer it to the 7 Hermetic Principles as noted in the Kybalion by Three Initiates.

Their teachings come from the ancient Egyptian Knowledge, whose founder is Hermes Trismegistus, concealing what is called Esoteric Wisdom and Secret Doctrines that are only revealed to the Adepts and Masters.

In fact, the word “Hermetic” itself means “secret” and “sealed so that nothing can escape”.

The Law of Attraction as is now known today is just a part of hidden truth concealed under the veil of public eyes. It is the extraction from the universal laws of the universe, which means that the law of attraction works under the dominion of the 7 Hermetic principles.

In the ancient era, Truth was not meant to be revealed to common men as the masters did not believe in “casting pearls before swine”, yet they stayed close to the teachings of “milk for babes; meat for strong men”.

By understanding the law – the underlying principles of the universe, man hold a great power within himself, which enables him to become a true Master of his life, achieving anything whatsoever he shall desire.

*Note: If you want to understand the spiritual law that governs our universe, I’d strongly recommend you to read The Kybalion, which is the classic book in the esoteric world. I use this book as a reference for this article, so check it out!

1. What is The Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect?

The Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect indicates that:

“Every Cause has its Effect; every Effect has its Cause; everything happens according to Law; Chance is but a name for Law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the Law.”

The Kybalion

There is no coincidence on this planet.

Nothing happens by chance because behind every cause, there are always consequences, which in turn become the causes for further outcomes.

This phenomenon is continuous in nature, meaning that it is a cycle of infinity and eternity which cannot be broken.

In basic understanding, the principle of cause and effect is the law of reaping what you sow. It’s like when you throw a boomerang, the boomerang will definitely come back to you – the thrower.

Similarly, the ball is thrown at the sky will absolutely fall back on the earth due to the law of gravity – the law of cause and effect.

2. How Does the Law of Cause and Effect Work?

The law of cause and effect is there to fulfill our human destination.

In other words, our lives are predestined to return to the final source (the Oneness) doesn’t matter what we do on this planet. The purpose of karma is to teach us necessary lessons which act as equipment for our journey towards self-realization.

It means that if you don’t get the lesson in this life, you may have to come back here another life reading the same website post to learn the lesson, only if you have “another chance”.

Nobody knows that this life is his or her last chance or not because that knowledge only belongs to the Creator, who is above all things.

To understand the working of karma is to understand the components of cause-effect, which is comprised of many factors such as intentions, thoughts, desires, actions, attitudes, habits, etc.

The special thing about karma is that not all karma is active at once. That is, you can “put a hold” on karma just to pay it later, which is also one of the reasons why you are incarnated in this life – to pay back what you have left in your previous life.

Nothing merely happens by chance, my friend, because everything is linked to a collective chain of causes and consequences. You may think that a man selling bread in the United States and a millionaire selling wood in China may not correlate to each other.

Yet, they are in the SAME universe, therefore, they are under the same law. If something happens in the United States, it is likely that that thing will cause some effects in China as well.

Karmic Level

To understand the totality of how the law of cause and effect works is literally a complicated process that is incomprehensible to human mind.

However, we can try to grasp some of its ideas just like trying to touch different parts of a big elephant.

Basically, karma works on 4 main levels:

  1. Personal Karma: This is the karma of an individual soul in which it can carry from this life to the next.
  2. Group Karma: This is the karma that will cause you to meet your previous friends, groups, or organizations in your previous lives.
  3. Collective Karma: This type of karma is related to the human race in general.
  4. Cosmic Karma: The most powerful karma of all as it can override other karma. It is the need for each individual to realize themselves and to evolve spiritually to become who they truly are.

Types of Karma

Different types of karma will explain to you why certain things happen in a particular way. The list below contains 15 different kinds of karma that may affect your life. If you don’t understand why your life behaves in a particular pattern but not another, you should contemplate your thoughts on this list.

Remember that the list below is not limited to this life only.

That is, it contains insights about your karma in your past lives as well because karma is a chain of cause and effect, not only cause and effect.

  1. Merit Karma: This karma is like the credit in your bank account: the reward for your good deeds, learned lessons, charity to the needy, etc.
  2. Recompense Karma: This is the compensation for what you have sacrificed to help others. For example, if you sacrifice your personal desire to take care of someone else in your previous life, that person could come back to help you or be your best friend in the present life.
  3. Redemptive Karma: There are many people incarnated into this world to help others to become successful. They are truly respectful masters whose desire is to clear off the collective karma of the mass.
  4. Retributive Karma: What goes around comes around. What you had or have done to others will come back to you, especially your bad behaviors.
  5. Attitudinal Karma: Your ingrained attitude, feelings, emotions, beliefs, habits, or behavior can also have karma. It can manifest as an attachment to a doctrine or ritual leading to either positive or negative results depending on what you believed in.
  6. Organic Karma: This karma reflects injuries or conditions from other lives. For example, if you had a tendency to self-indulge in your previous life, this can manifest as obesity or liver problems in the present. In other words, your past diseases will affect your current illnesses or injuries.
  7. Karmic Treadmill: It is about the destructive patterns that have not been solved, such as alcoholism or addiction.
  8. Work Karma: You are likely to continue the profession of your previous life.
  9. Symbolic Karma: Your present life condition is the representation of what you had done in the past. That is, you earn what you deserve.
  10. Communication Karma: How you communicate to others can also lead to karma, such as grace, gentle, polite, gossip, lie, hypocrisy, or mockery.
  11. Sins of Omission and Commission: This karma is about what you should have done but you didn’t do the action. By this, I mean that when you refuse to learn the lesson by behaving in a particular way, the karma will come back and forth to make sure that you learn the lessons.
  12. Relationship Karma: Who you were associated with in your past lives can have significant impacts on your present life.
  13. Pacts and Promises: This karma is about the promises, pacts, or contracts that you made with others.
  14. Karma in Suspension: This is the “karma on hold” that I have talked above, which means that it is in suspension to be dealt with at another time.
  15. Karma in The Making: What you are doing right now at the current moment will affect your future.

3. How to Use the Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect

In a nutshell, here are the steps of how to use the hermetic principle of cause and effect:

  1. Step 1: Purification of the body.
  2. Step 2: Use your willpower to set desired intentions.
  3. Step 3: Have faith that you will absolutely achieve what you want (Feel that you have already achieved it).
  4. Step 4: Do the required work to manifest your dream.
  5. Step 5: Do this work daily and repeatedly. Your actions will become a habit.
  6. Step 6: Persistently, consistently and patiently repeat all the previous steps. When the right moment comes, you shall reap what you sow.

In simple understanding, you are the grower and planter of your seeds, which are your intentions, thoughts, actions, behaviors, etc. Therefore, when you want to grow something, make sure that you grow the right seed.

If you want to grow an apple tree, then sow an apple seed. If you want to grow prosperity, then install abundance and richness into your mind. Your mind is the field that always needs to be cultivated.

Your fruits (results of your deeds) will first depend on your seed (intention). Yet, most people forget that before sowing the seed to the ground, you have to make sure that the soil is fertile and in good condition.

Symbolically, I mean that you need to purify yourself first before you sow any seed or intent to do any action because if your intentions are contaminated, your actions will likely to be so and so does your results.

Thus, purification of the body is very crucial in clearing off bad karma – cleaning and working to make the soil fertile.

Only then, you sow the seed of intention depending on what your desires and ambitions are.

As a tree cannot grow well without water (emotions), you need to have a certain conviction, feeling, and strong emotions attached to the seed that you sow. You can think of this step as visualization and having faith that one day your seed will grow up like a tree – the final product.

In order for a tree to grow properly, it requires daily work and regular care. This step symbolizes the daily actions that you take to nurture the tree. In this step, you must make this action become a habit, which is the program installed into your subconscious mind to do the work without much thinking effort.

The last step is the most important step, which is to survive the test of time. You achieve the final goals with your persistence, constancy, and patience with your faith, feeling, actions, and habits. Only then, the tree will grow healthily and shine brightly under the sunshine.

4. Summary

Lastly, this is the summary of what we’ve learned in this post:

  1. The Hermetic Principle of Cause and Effect: You shall reap what you sow. Every cause has an effect and every effect has a cause. Karma is always in motion – continual, perpetual, and unending unless we are raised to the level of oneness.
  2. The purpose of karma is to complete the human journey towards the final destination happening in the Afterlife, which is the reason why everyone has to die just to be reborn again in another world.
  3. Nothing happens by chance or coincidence. Everything is ruled by the law.
