Behind every number are energy, frequency, and vibration. Behind the exoteric understanding of number 2 is the esoteric meaning of number 2. In the outer form, you can see number 2 is manifested differently in various subjects such as the Moon in astrology, the High Priestess in tarot, the Duality Principle, etc.

However, in the inner essence, there is only one spiritual meaning of number 2 because “the clothes may vary but the person is the same.”

In spirituality, number 2 represents duality, harmony, balance, and sex. As two is the second number, it usually symbolizes opposition, feminine, and cooperation. Those who are born under number 2 energy are spiritually gifted to be a good mother, diplomat, and cooperator.

1. The Spiritual Principle of Duad

According to Pythagoras, number 2 is ‘Odd and Even’ because

2 (Even) = 1 (Odd) + 1 (Odd)

Duad is the reflection of the monad as the monad separates itself into 2 reality: one is reflected upon another. The monad is originally male, active, and positive in nature; therefore, the number 2 reflects/opposes this quality and becomes female, passive, and negative.

In esoteric school, number 2 symbolzes a line with 2 points
Number 2 spiritually symbolizes a line

In esoteric school, the symbol of the duad is a line because it has 2 points at the beginning and the end instead of only one point as in the case of the monad.  As number 2 comes forth after number 1, it represents the origin of all things (the Mother) while the number 1 symbolizes the cause of all things (the Father). Thus, number 2 is associated with feminine aspect, fertility, peace, and harmony.

The separation from the monad (unity) explains why we have duality principle in nature: male and female, positive and negative, yin and yang, etc. It opens the door for us to understand the Tree of Good and Evil. The fruits of the Tree are the 5 senses which can be either used or abused.

It is important to note that the Tree of Life and the Tree of Good and Evil are essentially one. However, due to the separation caused by the duad, the Tree of Good and Evil is the reflection of the Tree of Life. It’s like you look at the mirror and you see 2 different people: you and you in the mirror.

When electricity moves, it moves like a snake. Therefore, the serpent represents the universal electrical force, which can be either used or misused based on the mastery of one’s 5 senses.

In the Kabbalistic mysticism, the duad is Chochma, which is the Biblical Hebrew word for “Wisdom”. Only by reflection, Chochma will be emanated from Kether (Monad). It is the Divine Intellectual power to generate thought in our body.

The spiritual meaning of number 2 also applies in astrology. Duality encompasses the whole circle of the zodiac, with each sign being dual: Aries opposites Libra, Capricorn opposites Cancer, etc. When Noah brought pairs of animals into the Ark, he brought with him the 12 signs of the zodiac with 2 animals for each sign: male and female.

2. Spiritual Significance of Number 2

Crook and Flail of Osiris

In the ancient Egypt, crook and flail signify the power and authority of Osiris. The shepherd’s crook represents his kingship and the flail stands for the fecundity of the land. Spiritually, these 2 symbols are the representation of letter X. It is symbolic of using the power of discipline to harmonize the dual aspect in our human nature. Thus, we bring the bright and dark sides to balance and equilibrium by using the power of number 2.

2 Angels

There are 2 angels who record every action that we do, whether it is a good or evil act. The names of this pair of angels are Raquib and Aatid. According to Islamic teachings, Raquib sits on our right shoulder recording our righteous deeds while Aatid sits on our left shoulder to write down our bad deeds.

“Behold, two guardian angels appointed to learn his doings and scribe them: one sitting on the right and one on the left. Not a word does he utter but there is a sentinel by him, ready to note it.” (Quran:50-17)

On the Day of Judgement, this book will be opened to us and we will see what we have done in this lifetime.

There are also 2 other angels named Munkar (The Denied) and Nakir (The Denier) who visit us on the first day that we die. They are commanded to ask 2 simple questions, yet we need to fully confess with them. The 2 questions are:

  1. How did you acquire your wealth?
  2. On what did you spend it?

2 Commandments of Jesus

Jesus reduces the 10 commandments to 2 golden rules in the Gospel of Mathew:

“One of the scribes came up and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the foremost of all?”

Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘Hear, Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these. (Mark 12: 28-31)

Jachin and Boaz

Jachin and Boaz are the 2 pillars that King Solomon built for his God at Jerusalem. These 2 pillars hold a great significance in occultism because they are the symbols of initiation. Boaz stands on the left and Jachin to the right, representing the duality principle of number 2.

When a disciple is initiated to a secret order, he has to walk between these 2 pillars receive LIGHT:

LIGHT = 3 + 9 + 7 + 8 + 2 = 29/11/2

Thus, understanding the spiritual meaning of number 2 is essential to know the duality aspect of nature. Everything is created in pairs and everything contains within itself feminine and masculine aspects of nature.

3. Number 2 in Astrology

Number 2 spiritually means fertility, richness, and feelings.

In astrology, number 2 is associated with the Moon, which governs subconsciousness, dreams, and habits. Unlike the sun, the moon is your hidden emotions, feelings, and what you keep only for yourself.

Number 2 also relates to the second house whose governor is Taurus. Both of these astrological significances represent abundance in resources, fertility, and strong intuition, which are the characteristics of the Moon herself.

The element of number 2 is water, which is associated with emotions, feelings, and intuition. It is feminine in nature that helps us to listen to our inner voice and tune in with our divine nature.

You see, these characteristics are all the same because they are all under the influence of number 2. This is why we always need to consider the spiritual aspect first because it is what causes the manifestation on the physical plane.

4. Number 2 Tarot Card

The High Priestess
The High Priestess

In the Major Arcana, number 2 symbolizes the High Priestess – the second card of the Tarot deck. The High Priestess represents intuition, sensitivity, and the subconscious mind. If it is in a reversed position, it means we are not connected with our inner self.

We can see there is a symbol of the moon closed to her feet, symbolizing abundance, fertility, and the divine feminine. Besides her, there are 2 pillars of Solomon’s Temple: Jachin (he will establish) and Boaz (in his strength). These 2 pillars represent the concept of duality: black and white, yin and yang, good and evil, which are the spiritual characteristics of number 2 itself.

The High Priestess is in the middle of duality, which means that she is in the position of balance. She is associated with the Egyptian goddess Isis and many more such as Persephone and Artemis.

5. Personality of Number 2

In numerology, people with number 2 energy are sociable, approachable, and diplomat. They focus on relationships, teamwork, and balance. As the duad is the symbol of the Mother, there is a sense of nurturing, developing, and supporting within your nature.

Like a mother, you are gentle, kind, receptive, and helpful to others. Number 2 spiritually means duality, so you are a person who seeks balance, harmony, and peace.

Diplomacy, cooperation, and manifestation power are your natural talents. You are endowed with the gift of understanding other’s emotions, which makes you a highly sensitive person. Although you may look quiet on the outside but on the inside, you are the ocean of love and you get along with people very well.

Number 2 people don’t feel the need to impose their beliefs on others, rather, they want to please others as much as possible. They have the desire to merge with others to create a sense of warmth, understanding, and peace.

In numerology, number 2 is also connected with imagination and dream, through which you can understand your inner world intuitively. Number 2 can be very spiritual. Thus, you may be gifted with psychic power that can see through human nature as number 2 is related to the subconsciousness.

With number 2 vibration, you are a reserved, timid, and shy person, yet you are humble and kind. You require careful understanding of the situation before making any decision.

Number 2 is prone to lack of self-confidence, dependency, and insecurity as the duad is opposed to the monad. In esoteric teachings, 2 represents 2 directions, meaning it may cause you to lack focus, direction, and certainty.

Making decisions seem difficult for number 2 people. Since you are naturally shy and timid, you may be overcautious with others as well. One of your main lessons is to mingle with others while still affirming your individuality as you are likely to sacrifice your uniqueness to please others.
