Numerology is the language of the universe. Numbers are not literally numbers but representations of underlying universal laws that govern the universe. Man can never break the divine laws because the rules, orders, and algorithms of mathematics will never change.

Behind every number are energy, frequency, and vibration. Behind the exoteric understanding of number 9 is the esoteric meaning of number 9. 1. Spiritual Principle of Number 9 – Ennead

According to Pythagoras, 9 is the number of “Horizon” because it contains all other numbers before it (1-8). We cannot create a number greater than 9 because after 9 is 10 (1 + 0 = 1), which means things always return to their source (unity).

This is the endless circle of existence as the universe keeps repeating its pattern infinitely (there is no highest number in mathematics).

We have:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8  = 36/9
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 = 45/9

The sum of all numbers before has its root total of 9. Like the heptad, ennead is the symbol of Wisdom and Knowledge as it has learned the lessons of all numbers before it. It is called the number of Initiation for the same reason: the end of one thing is the beginning of other things.

At the end of one cycle is another new cycle. Thus, the spiritual meaning of number 9 represents the law of karma: cause-effect, beginning-end, sow-reap, etc.

Number 9 signifies completion as it is at the end of one cycle. 9 also symbolizes the perfection after the product (8) because it takes 9 months of pregnancy before the baby can be born. In esoteric schools, occultists see the image of number 9 as the generative egg with the stem as the spirit flowing into it.

Take any numbers and subtract them in a reversed position from each other. The remainder, when reduced, will always be 9.

63 - 36 = 27/9

In Kabbalistic system, Yesod is the ninth Sephira meaning “foundation”. Its location is in the sexual area of Adam Kadmon at the base of the spine. This location is strongly related to the kundalini force, which is the cosmic fire whose shape looks like 2 intertwined serpents. This is the symbolic serpent in the story of Garden of Eden.

When the kundalini is awakened, it rises up upward through the 33 segments of the spine, opening each chakra of the 7 chakras it encounters. The destination of this cosmic force is the third eye (eye of Horus), where you start to see the unseen and enter the realm of essence. These 7 chakras are the “7 seals of the book” in the bible which cannot be opened until you spiritually evolve.

The book is our body is the 7 seals are the 7 chakras. It has been said that through practice, we can reach up to the sixth chakra, which is associated with the awakening of the pineal gland. However, from the 6th chakra to 7th chakra, there is no specific path to reach there except by God’s will.

In astrology, associated with number 9 is planet Mars, which is the planet of physicality, passion, and drives. Mars can also be related to courage, sexual energy, and desire due to its fiery energy.

The element of number 9 is fire, signifying the spiritual fire the burns all the toxic substances in our body. In esoteric teaching, the fire is the light that enlightens our mind and soul. The kundalini is also called the cosmic fire because it is the fire of spirit that destroys fear, dispels darkness, and banishes ignorance.

Number 9 is related to the ninth house in astrology, which is the house of faith, religion, and self-expression. This house is governed by Sagittarius – astrology sign of independence and strong will. Sagittarius is a sign of wisdom because it doesn’t seek to believe. Rather, it is the seeker of Truth because the truth is eternal and remains unchanged through the progress of time and space.

In the Major Arcana, number 9 symbolizes the Hermit – the ninth card of the Tarot deck. The Hermit represents intuition, retrospection, and self-searching. If it is in a reversed position, it means loneliness, rejection, and withdrawal.

The Hermit stands on the top of a mountain holding a lantern with a six-pointed star inside. Right hands mean possession. Thus, he is the one being endowed with the power of knowledge and wisdom. He also holds a rod in his left hand, representing the discipline, power, and authority over his lower nature.

The 6-pointed star is sometimes known as the Seal of Solomon, symbolizing the concept of karma, harmony, and wisdom. The mountain he is standing upon indicates completion, development, and success. The snow-capped range also signifies the Hermit’s spiritual mastery, accomplishment, and growth, which are the characteristics of number 9 itself.

Thus, the spiritual meaning of number 9 is closely related to the end of a spiritual cycle which opens a door to higher realms. 9 is the number of “knowing thyself”, meaning that our true self is essentially hidden from within our body. We are not the body, but we are the spirit dwelling inside the body. That is, we are not human beings learning about spirituality, but we are spiritual beings who are on a human journey to find out who we truly are.
