Meaning of Letter A

According to esoteric school, the first letter that God designed was A, meaning Aleph in Hebrew and Alif in Arabic. It is necessary to breathe out (F) when we pronounce its sound. Thus, it represents the breath of God. Aleph is both life and breath. Letter A represents “ruach” in Hebrew, “prana” in Sanskrit, “pneuma” in Greek, and “spiritus” in Latin.

Aleph symbolizes the oxhead and its astrological sign is Taurus, which is the symbol of physical reproduction. The oxhead is a symbolic representation of the uterus with the horns being the fallopian tubes. Altogether, letter A represents physical reproduction.

In the Bible, the First Commandment is “thou shalt have no other Gods before me”, which means that there is only One God. When God took out the rib of Adam, he took the vertical line of letter A and reverse it. Therefore, we have V or E”V”E.

The shape of Aleph is two Yods: one is in Heaven and another is on Earth. The diagonal line is Vav, which is the link between the higher realm and the lower realm. In Kabbalistic teachings, Aleph represents the act of creating something out of nothing. It is the hidden spiritual Oneness that lies behind the veil of duality.
